The medium between solid and liquid in most technical cases is the seal. It keeps the lubrication where it is needed. That isn’t always easy since most of the time, that is where most of the movement is.

It stops liquids from leaking, it accommodates for the difference in expansion of the various materials and separates the inside from the outside. It is something like the “feminine element” in mechanical engineering: It can be very simple or highly complex. But it has to fit – it has to be the right one. It is flexible and often exerts gentle pressure in its surroundings in order to reach its goal: Keeping tight!
